The town has grown since the 1800s when it was connected to the rest of the island by an embankment. It has a good choice of shops, pubs, restaurants and art galleries along the harbour side.

Excursion 1

A visit to the award-winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway will engage, inspire and excite you. The sight of powerful majestic steam engines, the charm of quiet rural stations and the friendliness of traditionally uniformed staff, will leave you with some enduring memories of a special day out.
Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight, and with its prominent position along the seafront and hovercraft and passenger ferry links it is little wonder it is often referred to as "The Gateway to the Island". In addition to an expanse of sandy beaches which stretch right along the town, Ryde has a great selection of boutique shops, museums and galleries for you to visit along with lots of other things to see and do along its esplanade.

Excursion 2

Ventnor Botanic Garden lies at the heart of a remarkable microclimate on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. Protected by the chalk downs of the Ventnor Undercliff, VBG boasts an impressive collection of rare, subtropical and exotic plants. Normally found in protected glasshouses, that plants at VBG thrive in geographical plantings based on the Mediterranean zones of the world. You can meander through the Med garden, then go down under in the Australian and New Zealand Gardens. In the afternoon, chill out with the cacti and agave in the Arid Garden and then find some sun in the South African Terraces.
